M7 Docs   Installation

MuLab 7 System Requirements

  • Windows XP and up.
  • MacOS 10.6.8 and up.
  • Good soundcard/device with good driver and with at least 1 stereo output.
Not necessary but recommended:
  • Powerful multi-core CPU.
  • Minimum graphics space of 1024 x 768 pixels.

Download the MuLab zip package and unzip it to a new folder on your harddisk or USB device. After you have installed the MuLab package, double-click the MuLab application file to launch it.

MuLab comes as a portable and self-containing folder. It does not install anything on your system outside this folder. You can move the MuLab folder after you have installed it. You can even put it on a USB stick and carry your MuLab with you.

On Windows 7/8, it may be better not to install the Mulab folder under the 'Program Files' folder, but rather in a non UAC protected folder like C:\Applications\Music\Mulab. This is to avoid access problems caused by Windows' UAC mechanism. Alternatively you could try to run MuLab with "Run as administrator". To do so right-click the MuLab exe file.

The reason for this is that MuLab stores your user settings in a couple of files in MuLab/User/Settings. The good thing about that is that your MuLab installation is easily movable, and can be put on your USB stick for example. Another advantage is that you can have multiple independent MuLab installations on the same system, for example different versions of MuLab. Therefore it's best that the user settings are store inside the MuLab folder and thus this folder must be writable.

If you have Microsoft SmartScreen enabled, choose "More Info" + "Run Anyway".

If you get the alert "MuLab can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer", then control-click or right-click the MuLab.app icon and choose "Open". More info on OSX GateKeeper on this page.

MacOS Sierra or up:

Due to some new security 'feature' in MacOS Sierra called 'GateKeeper Path Randomization' it may be that MuLab does not launch as expected. This is because MacOS Sierra heavily distrusts 3rd party apps and MacOS Sierra puts all extracted files from a downloaded zip package into quarantine by default.

Now MuTools has made a little tool called "Quarantine Remover" to remove that default Apple quarantine. How to use it:

  • Launch Quarantine Remover, eventually via right-click -> Open
  • Drag-drop the MuLab.app file onto the green window area
From now on, MuLab can be launched normally.

Initial and Personal MuLab User Key

When buying a MuLab User Key, you instantly get an Initial User Key that you can use immediately. Note however that this Initial User Key only remains valid for a limited time. Soon after your purchase, and certainly before the Initial User Key becomes invalid, you'll also receive your Personal User Key via email. Make sure you also enter your Personal User Key as that's the permanent one.

Inserting Your MuLab User Key

A MuLab User Key starts with [ and ends with a with ] for example [MuLab6UL#hTgz8K-j...sUa+OQ8]

Launch MuLab, click the MULAB menu and choose "Insert User Key".

Copy the User Key to the clipboard, and paste it into the License Key field. This will realize your MuLab unlimited.

Note that if you were already hearing the demo noise (see details) it may take a couple of minutes before the demo noise disappears. Alternatively you could restart MuLab.

Updating an existing MuLab installation

Take these steps:

  • Follow the instructions above for a complete new installation.
  • Goto your previous MuLab installation folder and copy the User sub-folder to the clipboard.
  • Goto your new MuLab installation folder and delete the User sub-folder.
  • Then paste the User sub-folder from the clipboard into the new MuLab installation folder.

This way, the new installation will use all your previous user settings and files.

Removing Your MuLab User Key

Launch MuLab, click the MULAB menu and choose "Insert User Key". You'll see your user key. Select all of it and press delete, then click OK while the User Key field is empty. You'll get the question "Are you sure to remove your user key?". Click "Yes".

Simply delete the MuLab folder. MuLab does not put any data outside the MuLab folder.
